Budget Western Fashion Meets Egyptian Hijab: Love It or Shove It?

(Before I start this post, I just want to say that some readers seem to be unaware of the fact that I write this blog with my own opinions of fashion. I'm not a politician so don't need to be politically correct and if I state my opinion of an outfit I don't particularly like, it's not haram. I apologise if you are offended but I genuinely do not intend to personally upset anybody.)

Anyway, I thought I'd ask your opinions of these outfits. They look kind of like an Egyptian designer went crazy in Primark. I like certain bits of some of them, but on the whole I'm not hot on them, especially not all the belting.

What do you reckon? Would you actually wear any of these? :S

The Ribbon Hijab Look: Love it or Shove?

I'm feeling rather put out today as I have messed up my chemistry exam biiiiggg time this morning :( Anyway, thought I'd post as have decided I couldn't really care less about doing Pharmacy anyway, if I fail I can study English which is what I wanted to do in the first place, but that's another story.. What I like to call the ribbon hijab look:

I'm curious to know what you think of this look. My mum thinks I'm weird but I am loving it for no reason at all, a bit of tweaking to the odd scarf look and I think it would work. So what dya reckon, love it or shove ittt? (..and yes, SM is the home of the original love it or shove it posts, I do wish other blogs would think of their own ideas. Just thought I'd clarify that because I'm in a bad mood lol).

A Head Scarf (and a Neck Scarf): Love it or Shove it?

We've all come across that hijabi who defies all the style rules in the book and dons both a neck scarf and a headscarf at the same time. In person, I have only seen one girl that managed to pull this look off and I think the reason for that was that she was wearing a high neck coat and the second scarf was only loosely draped across her shoulders.

I personally think that the look is quite nice for hijabi beginners or 'hijabis in training' as I like to call them but for me, it is so much more practical to wear a simple wrap style that covers your neck and chest and doesn't look like you've tried too hard!

The Worlds Most Expensive Abaya: Love it or Shove it?

Designed by British couture designer Bruce Oldfield, the abaya features 4,668 diamonds and 359.7 grams of white gold. Valued at $350,000 the abaya was sold in the Gulf and the money was donated to the Islamic Relief charity. I love the abaya, but have actually seen nicer ones for far cheaper, still at least the money went to a good cause. But what do you think? Should the hijab be taken to these extremes of luxury? After all, whats really wrong with somebody spending from the money that they have on things like this as long as they fulfill their religious obligations first? I'm in two minds on this one, but I don't think I could resist such lovely attire if someone just gave it to me :D

Amy Winehouse Beehive Hijab: Love it or Shove it?

I saw this headscarf today while browsing hijab fashions on the net and was reminded of English singer, Amy Winehouse. Although she's had her matted locks cut short now that she's in rehab, the beehive will always be her signature look. But could it be a hijab look? I'm not sure, I think it looks quite cool and quirky but maybe not for the everyday hijabi:

A Song and Dance..and a Hijab: Love it or Shove it?

I never knew there were so many hijabi singers in the world, but apparently there are and I'm a tiny, tiny bit surprised. I'm not singling out hijabis, I think Muslims in general should steer quite clear of singing careers. Obviously there's the whole nasheed thing that you have to bear in mind but singing as an actual career choice is not something I really approve of.. but maybe that's because of the way I have been brought up as it doesn't really have that much of a religious basis. But Islam does encourage humans to do useful work for their society, singing is not a useful job in my opinion.

It seems, Arab TV, as well as others like Malaysia don't agree with me, what with shows on many channels similar to the X Factor etc. Which brings me to some interesting photos I found:

These were taken in Malasiya, I'm not sure what the event is exactly but it looks like a singing contest:

Now, I am quite an open minded person and I hate saying that this is "haram or that is bida or you're a kaffir" at the end of the day everyone has logic and that's what they will be judged by however, I really think hijab is not just a bit of cloth or an extra layer of clothing.

The Quran talks a lot more about acting in an appropriate, modest manner than dressing modestly. I think a hijab is something you create around you, an actual barrier built by lowering your gaze and the way in which you act and talk around the opposite sex. I feel like singing in a 'modern' world breaks this barrier for both males and females and no amount of cloth can put it back up. Or am I just a bit uptight? I feel uptight writing it! But what do you think?

'Fake Flesh': Love it or Shove it?

Have you ever seen those skin coloured tops? Well I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole but clearly some hijabis quite like them. They are usually worn under short sleeves and give the appearance (from a distance) that nothing is being worn underneath the short sleeved top at all. I think it looks odd, hijab or not but what do you reckon? Here are some pics to show you what I'm talking about:

I've only ever seen this done with sleeves and I don't think it looks stylish at all. The actress in the blue dress would have been better off with a faux fur bolero and as for the model, well.. if she really must wear that top she could have at least worn it with a nice cardigan or jacket. That's just my opinion though, I sure a lot of people think it looks nice but these coloured tops just aren't for me.

Hijab and Poncho: Love it or Shove it?

Before I start I have to say I completely and utterly hate the idea of hijab and poncho and I shove it right here but I am going to do a post on it because I want your opinions and also because I have seen a fair few hijabis adopt the poncho as their very best friend :S

Surprisingly, I did not find many photos of hijabis with ponchos but here are a couple to show you:

These two don't look too bad actually but I think the long ones look far better with trousers as wearing a long poncho with a skirt/jilbab is a material overload. Obviously with a sheer poncho you would have to wear modest clothes underneath but they could come in useful on those hot summer days.

Anyway, I'm still sceptical but I can see how a poncho could be nice with a headscarf..here are some ponchos I like:

And the only kind of poncho I would ever even consider wearing myself..

Hijab And Swimsuit: Love it or Shove it?

I was all for the idea when I heard about it but now I think I'd rather find an all female pool and wear a 'normal' costume or give the whole thing a miss and I love swimming! It's not that I think they are immodest at all but they just look a bit to much to swim in comfortably.. although I haven't actually tried on one of these halal swimming costume so my opinion is hardly valid :I

Starting with Primo Modo and its selection:

OK, so they don't look too bad but the price (cheapest $85) is really unreasonable for what it is but I have to say my fave is the pink one up top :D

Next up the 'Burqini' which I'm sure most of you will have heard of from Ahiida. This site offers a selection of fits ranging from 'active fit' all the way to 'modest fit'

Active Fit:Well I'm still not sure about the whole thing to be honest, I think I'll shove it for now even though I can see why it would be useful to Muslimahs and it is a great invention ^-^ But what about you?

Hijab and Shades: Love it or Shove it?

Wearing a headscarf and sunglasses as most of you know was a great fashion statement in the 60s and 70s and they've manged to find their way back on the runway after all those years. I personally love the look and think no Turkish hijab is complete without a pair of sunnies:

Love this style, just add a hijab cap under and your good to go. The top look cute too actually lol, this girls found a clever use for the 'fold' in her hijab:

Usually I put in some 'style donts' for good measure but I can't really think of any for this one. The only thing I would say is make sure, there being so much choice available, that you choose a pair to suit the shape of your face. Rounded frames are generally better suited to squared-off face shapes as they add softness to already defined features. A squared frame can look too harsh on a squared face shapes. On the other hand, a squared frame will usually look better on somebody with a round or oval face shape. The squared glasses will provide more of a definition and a focal point. Although, headscarves themselves can be used to shape the face but it is a good idea to follow those general rules.

Dress and Jeans: Love it or Shove it?

OK, this style is generally the one that most hijabis (especially in the western world) will go for: the dress, jeans and headscarf look. There are so many ways to wear this it’s ridiculous and in this post I’m going to try and give you some tips on how to and how NOT to wear this style. And I’ll get the eye sores out of the way first…

How NOT to wear your dress/tunic:

One – Don’t think leggings are guna cut it. I usually don’t do the whole ‘Haram! Haram!’ thing but I feel this needs saying…

Two – Please don’t buy things just because they are long and cheap!! Generally most people who read fashion blogs won’t do this so I doubt you really need to be told lol. But, too many times I have been told to buy something just because it will ‘do the job’ so to speak and this will lead to a disaster that could look a bit like this…

I really hope nobody is thinking ‘hmm that’s OK actually’.

And speaking of disasters…this is the mother of all fashion disasters:

Please steer clear of the denim dress when you want to wear jeans. Unless you are actually trying to oppose fashion.

And lastly thick, cheap looking, elastic waist belts kind of speak for themselves..

If you want to wear a waist belt, I would advise you to pop a cardigan over the top of your dress and then LOOSELY tie a skinny, un-elasticated belt around your waist so it brings your outfit together nicely but doesn't cinch in your waist. Perfect.

How you could wear a dress with jeans:

Skinny Jeans:

Finally, some nice outfits. But before that I wanted to put some 'skinny solutions' for those that want to wear the skinny jean. First, I would ditch any thought of super skinnes...

Here are some straight leg alternatives to the skinny leg:

I found these on swell.com, they have a fantastic range of straight legs for fair prices so it's well worth checking them out. If you still want skinnies, you could find a pair that aren't so tight and get them in the next size up. I've done this on a couple of pairs and it works a treat because the dress will cover the messy bit caused by the belt at the waist.

Dress, Boots and Jeans:

A good way to wear not-so-baggy jeans is by wearing boots over the top and then a dress that goes down to the top of the boots. If you choose the boot and dress carefully, the end results is really nice and your tighter jeans won't go to waste:

Yes the jeans in there are really quite tight but the dress is long enough to cover them. Not being big headed but I really wouldn't mind having this outfit lol.

Here are some dresses I found on shukr which I think are lovely and I would personally wear with straight cut jeans:

My personal opinion is that the first one is long enough to wear with skinnies :D

Trench Coat:

Of course, I'd be foolish to think I could write about all the possible dress and jeans styles but here is the last style that I wanted to show you. It is basically a dress underneath an open trench coat. It looks so cool:

And last but certainly not least, my fave :)

A good quality trench is defiantly a wardrobe essential, being a timeless piece that can be worn most of the year round. I'd say you need a thin black one and a winter trench in a colour of your choice.
